Farewell to a Shepherd of Peace
Pope Francis Dies at 88
On Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88. He died peacefully at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, marking the end of an era for the Catholic Church and for millions around the world who looked to him as a symbol of humility, compassion, and hope.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 by becoming the first Jesuit Pope, the first from the Americas, and the first to take the name Francis — inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the poor. His papacy was defined by a call to simplicity, mercy, and social justice, reaching beyond the confines of the Church to touch lives across faiths, nations, and cultures.
From the very beginning, Pope Francis made it clear that he would lead with a different tone. He chose not to live in the opulent Apostolic Palace, opting instead for modest quarters in Casa Santa Marta. He washed the feet of prisoners, embraced the marginalized, and spoke openly about the need for a Church that listens and heals rather than judges and condemns.
His outspoken advocacy for migrants, the poor, and environmental stewardship placed him at the heart of some of the most pressing global conversations of our time. His encyclical Laudato Si’ called on humanity to care for "our common home," and his efforts toward interfaith dialogue promoted peace and understanding in an increasingly divided world.
The symbolism of his death falling on Easter Monday is not lost on the faithful — a day that signifies resurrection, renewal, and eternal life. For many, it feels like a final benediction from a pope who spent his life offering light in times of darkness.
In the coming days, the Vatican will open its doors to mourners, and world leaders, religious figures, and the faithful will gather to honor his life and legacy. The conclave to elect his successor will begin shortly, but the spirit of Pope Francis — a champion of mercy, humility, and love — will continue to inspire generations to come.
Today, we do not only grieve the loss of a pope. We remember a man who dared to make the Church more human, more honest, and more hopeful.
Rest in peace, Pope Francis. Your light will not fade.
