UAE's Commitment at the G20: A Decisive Step Against Hunger and Poverty

The UAE's $100 Million Initiative to Support the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

At the 19th G20 summit held in Brazil, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, announced a significant $100 million commitment from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to support the newly formed Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. This initiative aims to coordinate international efforts to eradicate these persistent issues affecting millions worldwide.

During his participation at the G20, Sheikh Khaled emphasized the UAE's dedication to supporting global initiatives that combat hunger and poverty at both regional and international levels. This financial commitment will be channeled through the UAE Aid Agency, reinforcing efforts to promote sustainable development, peace, and prosperity.

The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty is backed by major international players, including the African Union, the European Union, international organizations, development banks, and philanthropic groups such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This joint effort reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the structural causes of hunger and poverty.

In his opening remarks at the summit, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva highlighted that food insecurity is a "stain that shames humanity." He noted that hunger and poverty are not the result of scarcity or natural phenomena but rather political decisions. In a world producing nearly 6 billion tonnes of food annually, it is unacceptable that so many people continue to suffer from malnutrition.

Sheikh Khaled also met with President Lula da Silva prior to the G20 meeting to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations between the UAE and Brazil. During these discussions, key agreements in investment and international cooperation were signed, further strengthening ties between the two countries.

The $100 million commitment announced by the UAE at the G20 represents a significant step toward eradicating hunger and poverty globally. This initiative not only reinforces the UAE's active role in global policies but also highlights the importance of strategic alliances in addressing complex challenges. As more countries join this cause, sustainable solutions are expected to emerge, benefiting millions of people worldwide.
